Hi Andreas,

It makes no difference to me whether a European or an African or South
American or Australian, etc., develops the software. We have been very
fortunate with the developments of PSK modes and then many other sound
card modes from several different countries around the world, including
the U.S.

My question to John was why he felt it would be a European ham that
would develop a new ARQ protocol.

If you look longer term with computer development throughout the world,
I think it will be very interesting to see how it will unfold over the
next decade to two decades. If the majority of developing countries
continue to move toward Linux and therefore Linux development, we can
expect some world shifts in OS use. And that in turn, will tend to move
amateur radio software in that direction too. I personally am moving to
more and more Open software, particularly software that works cross
platform. That is why I have dropped the use of Microsoft Office and
switched to Open Office, and similarly moved to Firefox, Thunderbird,
GIMP (as much as I can), etc.

It is only because of amateur radio software that I can not switch
completely over to Linux. If I only needed to browse the internet, have
a high end office suite, e-mail, etc., then I would have already made
the switch. WINE and even Win4Lin is not perfect either when it comes to
certain kinds of interfacing such as port access.
