John, Your post responded to my comment that we had developed two sound card modes for the PC. One for windows and one for Linux. Your post only indicated:
"Yes I know I ran test on it.... It was carp.. could only - at best to 42.72 per cent of what a TNC would do." This perhaps was Amtor running under Linux? I don't know the specifics of what you were running. Our current reality is that there are ARQ modes that run on dedicated boxes that can handle the switching requirements (Pactor on amateur radio) and there are ARQ modes that run on PC sound cards for Windows (SCAMP tested but not developed further) and Linux (PSKmail). Needless to say, the days of hardware modes is coming to a close (hardware to me includes any outboard box even if it has a uP). In fact, it is because the sound card modes will not operate the same way as the separate box modes, that their availability as a software program will change the dynamic. Just as the dynamic was changed irrevocably with the initial sound card modes, and particularly PSK31. Almost no one uses stand alone hardware boxes for RTTY or PSK31 or any of the many other sound card modes anymore. At one time, I had a LOT of money tied up in everything from C-64 stuff to later Kantronics and AEA and HAL. Now the main depreciating asset is the computer:) We should not be thinking of coming up with a mode that works with Pactor (Amtor is basically long gone for a decade now), but rather, we should be thinking of modes that stand on their own and have the attributes that have already been proven to work with existing PC's. Even faster PC's will make this more and more practical. 73, Rick, KV9U John Becker wrote: >At 09:33 AM 9/15/2006, you wrote: > > >>John, >> >>What modes are you talking about.
