Thanks, Peter / Phil / John / Simon et al for your suggestions. I have managed to avoid installing Vista altogether, but I will likely give all of these suggestions a try, including using Windows 7, which I am going to have to try anyway at some time or other.
I still vastly prefer Linux to Windows, and can get many of my "exists only as windows app" programs, like old Great Circle map generators, coil building programs, etc., to run reasonably well as "guest apps" under wine, so will continue to explore the Run Under Linux options as a primary focus. I have grown to appreciate the simplicity and reliability of fldigi, but I like the more advanced radio control features of HRD and I miss having many of the other modes from DM780 available to me that are not supported in fldigi.
