I finally had to clear out all the virtual Com Ports from the registry and start over. This made the system much more stable. Now I am very careful to always plug USB devices into the same physical port. This appears to help with the issue.
Take a look at http://www.digi.com/support/kbase/kbaseresultdetl.jsp?id=274 But make certain you back up your registry before proceeding. You can mess up your machine pretty easily with Regedit. I am no expert in these matters. Wes, WZ7I
