Simply reassigning the USB serial port to a previously used Com Port number
on my XP machine resulted in some of my virtual serial ports not working
correctly. I finally had to clear out all the virtual Com Ports from the
registry and start over. This made the system much more stable. Now I am
very careful to always plug USB devices into the same physical port. This
appears to help with the issue.

Take a look at http://www.digi.com/support/kbase/kbaseresultdetl.jsp?id=274

But make certain you back up your registry before proceeding. You can mess
up your machine pretty easily with Regedit.

I am no expert in these matters.
