That assumes the  system was  still working  when the  device was removed 
....not so  this case .. the  mother board failed and had to  re biuld the  pc 
.. new  mother  board has 'no' comm ports .. printer or  serial ..hence the  
change to  usb>serial 

So all the  ghosts are still in the  machine , mboard pors .. pci-serial .... 
and the  only  common one  the  ft897 cable , which was and still  is   usb 
(future proof) is the only  bit that wont  work .. appart from  with  HRD .. 
the  usb >printer is fine and the  usb 56k modem is  ok as well  (used for  
fax) 

Fldigi  will  address  usb/com4 to  work the  rig ptt .. but  will not  
communicate  with the  rig  via the  usb port
