But the thing is, Siegfried, WSPR is limited by design to use just 200Hz of
spectrum. Each individual user needs only about 6Hz of bandwidth. JT65 also
uses quite a small part of the spectrum. I accept that those modes don't allow
the free text contacts you are looking for, but these modes can handle the
number of people who wish to use them without interfering with other users.

The trouble with ROS is the amount of spectrum it requires to allow free text
to be exchanged using WSPR-like power levels means that there isn't a place for
it on the popular bands like 40m and 20m. ROS would be fine if it was just an
experimental mode being used occasionally between a few enthusiasts. But by
making a free download available to all it has become a problem for all of
digital ham radio.

With the number of users out there, even 3 channels won't be enough for ROS to
become a widespread use mode. It is no good just designing a clever mode if you
don't also consider how it will be used given the constraints that exist within
the amateur bands.

The question I would like to ask you, Siegfried, and any other defenders of the
ROS software is this: Why should dozens of other users be pushed aside and
suffer QRM just so people like you can try to make DX contacts using lower
power than normal? No-one is forcing you to use such low power. Taking up
excessive bandwidth in order to do so is plain selfish.

If people want to make DX contacts they should use one of the existing modes
and more power. It would be nice to be able to use modes like ROS but our bands
simply aren't wide enough to allow everyone to do so.

Why not just use PSK31 which at 30 or so Hz is narrow enough to allow dozens of
simultaneous free text contacts and still does not demand huge amounts of power
to work DX?
