Should I grab the CVS version of > gtk 1.3.11 and apply patches, or does someone have a non-broken tarball of > the patched version? building from CVS is a little bit more complicated and requires a working setup of aclocal, autoconf and automake. It looks as if this is not the case on your system (or you didn't read the fineprint about compiling from CVS as found in the file HACKING). I have rechecked the gtk+-directfb-1.3.11 tarball that is available from http://www.directfb.org/download/GTK+-DirectFB/ and it unpacks just fine on my system. Are you using GNU tar? I'd suggest you check your versions of gunzip and tar. FYI, I've used tar (GNU tar) 1.13.25 gzip 1.3.2 (2001-11-03) to create the tarball.
