I assumed that common pc cards like this would require support
from their bios.  It would be great if I could tell which video
cards didn't require bios support, or if I had documentation
describing what their bios does on powerup.

I wasn't aware of this device.  It does just what I want to do
and they seem to push Linux support.  Unfortunately, it looks
like I can't just go buy one somewhere, but I'll look into this
one.
