Oh, no, not anything like that at all.  This a true distortion, not
just an aspect ratio problem.   The left "border" of the display has a
"wow" (an inward "dent" near the top) in it.  Probably the best thing
to do is see a picture of it.  First, for reference, a picture of
Mplayer -vo dfbmga properly filling the viewble area of the
television:

There are several things to notice here.  First is on the left, see
how the picture is "wowed" inwards in the top left?  Also it seems as
if the right hand side of the display is wrapping around to the left
where the "wow" is.  As well, notice that the first line of the list
(the one highlighted) is off the top of the screen.

These are all artifacts that I was getting when I was using fbset and
matrox set to set the timings the display, before your CRTC2 changes
to DirectFB.

For some reason, it seems, the same display mode is not being used
with GTK+-DirectFB as is being used with Mplayer -vo dfbmga.

Any ideas why?
