I already started implementing an autogenerated drop shadow with alpha channel. The necessary piece in DirectFB has already been added with DWOP_OPAQUE_REGION, which forces the alpha channel of the main window content to 0xff. The generic X11 code writes 0x00. Shaped windows are not suitable for drop shadow, because the opaque region is defined by one rectangle.
