I guess updating GDKDFB 2.0.9 to 2.6.x while backporting bugfixes from 2.9.x series is possible, but i don't know if it's really worth it. A question: why don't you want to use GTK 2.9 ? is it because of the size of the resulting set of libraries (gtk+gdk+cairo) ?
