There's no need for a kernel patch.
You just have to develop a user-space app, then DirectFB uses the char
device /dev/fbX for talking to the hardware and you neeed root permissions
to execute the app.

In the DirectFB source there is a dir called wm/unique that has an out of
date wm.

I've used it for an IPTV Set Top Box with a MIPS processor.
I know of other devices thas runs on MIPS (Au1220) and XScale processors.
A hardware accelerator is recommended!
