Hi,
You are correct, DirectFB will be the best solution if don't want X. I am
not telling this because I like DirectFB. Long Time back I started to search
for a graphical environment which meets the following conditions.

*) Size (Only the binaries and Lib) should not exceed 3MB
*) Complete Graphics Support for rendering etc...
*) A proper IDE for developing apps.
*) A Proven platform
*) Easily Portable
*) IMPORTANT NO X (Because it is heavy)

I tried the following platforms

*) NANO-X (This is really good, but there is not much activity and no
further release after Nov 2001)
*) DirectFB (I selected and started my development)
*) OpenGUI (Not attractive for graphics rich apps)
*) SVGALIB ( "" )
*) TinyX (I could not find any information, and it is based on X)

I finally selected the DirectFB with GTK, because

*) Reasonably good Direct Access Layer (DirectFB)
*) GTK is portable to any platform tomorrow
*) Small footprint
*) You have GLADE for developing your GUI
*) Very good activity
*) Good Support
*) Continuous releases

OK~ Friend everything is based on my experience, I am not against any other
packages, and MORE IMPORTANT I AM NOT RESPOSIBLE FOR ANY OF YOUR ACTIVITIES,
DECISION YOU TAKE BASED ON MY SUGGESTION.

REGARDS
RD

Subject: [directfb-users] how to actually use directfb??

Hi All,

I've been wanting to use DirectFB for a long time now. Someone on our
development team is working on a build script for XDirectFB which I am
excited about. GTK+DirectFB will be added into Gentoo once we have an
unmasked GTK+2 script. Meanwhile, I want to ask about DirectFB. How in
the world does one actually use it? The documentation is quite unclear on
this point. I can get some of the examples to run, and they do look
fantastic. However, I'd like to be able to have a graphical environment
without running X, and I thought DirectFB was the answer to that. Am I
mistaken in my thinking?

Please help.

Thanks,
