This line is what is was bothering me:
(!) DirectFB/Matrox/Maven: Error controlling `/dev/i2c-2'
isn't this for the second head and one rquired on the primary?

I think that MPlayer has been linked against the correct version, this is the
version information.

Trouble is that I had various copies of directfb lying around both in usr and
usr/local, normally more careful ;-|, back to 17. Hopefully they have been
cleaned up but may have missed a file.
