you can delete /etc/fb.modes, if you are using vesafb. or to be more correct. put the output of fbset in /etc/fb.modes as the first mode.

When I start XDirectFB it seems that the resolution is still 1024x768 but
the screen is only 640x480. fbset -i is the same as above. The bottom and the right side
are black, and mouse can't move to it.
