Hi,

after taking some time out to retrace my steps, and with the latest
hints on the mailing list, I finally succeeded in getting XDirectFB to
run on my TV ! The main tricks in getting it right this time involved a)
starting from clean kernel sources instead of my Red Hat ones and b)
using the right cable (I was using a blackish cable with a seven pin
SVIDEO connector, which didn't work at all, though I seem to recall this
is the one that came with the G550. The grey one with a four pin SVIDEO
connector worked fine).

I'd also like to add to Ville's document, adding some explanation that
would have helped me here and there, and fixing some problems I
encountered, as well as adding more documentation on different apps to
run (like XDirectFB). (Is there a CVS version of this document
available ?)

The basic goal with my G550 is to recreate an environment I had with my
now broken G400, with the added bonus of having transparancy e.a. work
as well.

On my G400, I had 800x600 TV/output, and I also used a trick to reroute
the internal first head to both external heads, resulting in a cloned
setup and XVideo acceleration on TV/out.

Now, for a couple of questions:

a) it starts up 720x576, which is ok for PAL. Could I also make it use
800x600, or is it inherently better to use 720x576 ?
b) When I run mplayer with dfbmga as the video output, it of course
thrashes my XDirectFB, plays fine, and on exit leaves X thrashed. Is
there some way to restore the framebuffer somehow so that I get my X
session back ?
c) I can also run mplayer with x11 or sdl, causing it to playback to
my X session. This is a lot more jerky, of course. Is there a better
way to integrate mplayer and XDirectFB ? Would having the fusion device
help in this situation ? I know it means more than one app can access
the framebuffer simultaneously, but do they thrash each other or work
well side by side ?
d) For X, I was using an app called "unclutter" to hide the mouse
pointer (The system works with LIRC, so no mouse needed). Is there some
way to hide the mouse pointer in XDirectFB ?

Thanks for any answers.
