(I assume you are talking about XFree86)
.. the X extensions include XRender (since 4.0.2, I think), which
provides support for transparency ..

most, if not all (regular).

... but (currently) no integration with X, so you have to rely on
DirectFB to set the alpha value of windows etc ..
there is an extension by Scott Brumbaugh which allows to do this, but it
requires XDirectFB, and most likely won't work on 'regular' X servers
with XRender support.
