Well somehow I managed to get the vesa driver to work.  It's a good start I suppose.  It's opened up though a new question.

What is the difference between what I've enabled in the kernel and what I've downloaded from directfb.org.  Is this in addition to what the kernel gives me?
What I have so far is what I've turned on in the kernel, plus I built the cel266vgaio module. This seems to load and built okay.  Depmod returns a number of errors, so maybe I do need the rest of DirectFB?

I've looked through the docs and the requirements.  I was under the impression that I needed devfs .  Maybe not ?

Sorry for the noob questions.
