I don't care much about the viafb driver.  It's part of the epia patch and I built it as a module.  The driver I'm speaking about is the cle266vgaio.o.  I built it by first enabling fb in the kernel.  Second grabbing cle266vgaio.c and cle266vgaio.mk from the gfxdrivers directory.  Built for v24-static.
It built fine and modprobe is fine, but depmod -e reveals some dependency issues.  I could include the depmod returns in an email, but I'm assuming (could be wrong) they are there because I haven't installed the entire package?

Hmm, the viafb from http://epia.kalf.org/epia_kernel/patch-2.4.24-epia1.gz
doesn't export MMIO regions and accelerator ID, so it still won't work with
the DirectFB driver.

The viafb from directfb.org should be stable. But there was a crash (fixed)
with older gcc versions.
