mga_vid has nothing to do with DirectFB but I'll try to answer your

There is no correct mode per say. There are some modes included with 
mplayer sources in the TOOLS/TVout directory.

Not really. TVs don't have a fixed horizontal resolution.

It's probably due to scaling. You need to use a deinterlace filter.
