I must be nobody then! I have software opengl running on directfb, and I hardware accelerated opengl running in a pure framebuffer. I imagine it's more todo with DirectFB internals than mesa. It's on my list of things todo, just not at the top at the moment. If anybody knows what the problem/missing link is - i'd be mighty glad of a point in the right direction!
