Thanks for the suggestion. Cairo is rather heavyweight for what I'm trying to acheive, though. I have got rotated images working by manually copying from one surface to another, as dfbsee does and as suggested by Sven Neumann. This doesn't seem to noticeably slow down my application, which is good. Unfortunately I don't think it's possible to use this technique for text except by drawing the text into a temporary surface, rotating it as I currently do for images, and then copying that to the destination.
