If you're really tight on memory and coding your own rotation algorithms, I 
seem to remember from Uni that is not that hard to transpose a matrix "in 
place", using a fairly simple recursive routine IIRC. Would only work for 
"square" images though... :)

As a workaround you can certainly do what you suggest!
Just out fo interest, why rotate the text at all? I can certainly see the need 
to rotate the images to make them match the frame's orientation, but you 
control the orientation of the text as you draw it, so as long as you composite 
the text with the rotated image, there is no need to rotate it?
