Thanks for the tip - I will try to rebuild using gcc later and see what difference it makes. For now I am happy that after installing gnuradio, I could install the rtl-sdr and gr-osmosdr packages, and since I already had Qt 4.8 installed I could also build gqrx without major issues. Concerning performance, I do see an "Using Volk machine: generic_orc" message when I start gqrx; however, running an FM stereo receiver with an rtlsdr dongle at 2 Msps, 4096 point fft at 30 fps with averaging enabled consumes about 50% cpu on a dual core imac from early 2009.
