There is a problem if your project becomes perceived as a the de-facto GNUstep 
desktop environment and then disappears from GitHub as a result of a DMCA 
take-down notice from Apple (which, if you’re infringing NeXT copyright by 
distributing their icons, will happen eventually).

This is even more of an issue with something like git, where the icons are 
there permanently unless you rewrite history.  If you ever do need to remove 
them for legal reasons, then you will need to delete them from the history, 
which will break anyone who has a clone of your repo.
