The two options to play with are: For window maker, in its preferences, Window Handling Preferences "Opaque Resize" For GNUstep, GSUseGhostResize (with split views only though). You can set it with SystemPreferences. I think to remember there was a second setting, but I don't find it, maybe it was removed.
