Dear ’Steppers,

First of all, thank you to everyone who took the time to respond!

It seems there isn’t just one reason for not attending the meeting, but rather
many different ones. What I’ve noticed, however, is that for some, the meeting
apparently brings back traumatic memories of meetings at work. That’s
definitely not the intention - the monthly GNUstep meeting is meant to be a
space for informal exchange and open discussion, a chance to catch up and share
ideas with one another. For my part, I’m always very interested in hearing what
others are currently working on. I also believe that this more direct form of
communication makes it easier to clear up misunderstandings that can arise in
written communication on the mailing list - for example, due to the lack of
tone, intonation, and voice. A frank conversation can sometimes work wonders!

Now for the second most important reason: the timing and the schedule. We’re
scattered all over the world - North America, Europe, Australia - each in our
own time zone. And most of us have jobs that keep us busy during the week.
That’s why the meeting was scheduled for a Saturday (the second Saturday of the
month), so that the meeting wouldn’t conflict with work. At least, that was the
intention. But if a majority now says they prefer a meeting on weekdays (Monday
through Friday), we should of course change that. Keep in mind, however, that
the end of the workday in Europe coincides with working hours in America, and
the same is true between America and Australia (which would then mean after
midnight for Europe).

Here’s what I suggest: it would be best if everyone could reply to this email
with their preferred days for the meeting, along with the time (please use
GMT!). We’ll figure out a compromise from there.

As for the meeting’s duration of about three hours, just to clarify: this is
meant to be a time frame during which you can drop by. I don’t expect anyone
(except maybe Greg) to be present for the entire three hours. There’s no
obligation here.

I’ll start by listing the times that work for me:

Friday, Saturday, Sunday: 4:00 PM – 8:00 PM GMT

Best regards,

    Lars
