Hmmm...

I have a whois lookup on my domains page, but I don't run a WHOIS server. I
just pass the request off to whois.opensrs.org which does its thing. Of
course, this certainly doesn't get around the "Your Query Limit Has Been
Exceeded" messages which pop up from time to time.

In truth, you couldn't possibly do a local whois database without coaxing
each of the existing registrars to part with their database. As Charles
points out, ICANN requires that they make the data available at a fee of
$10,000 per year.

Then you've got the challenges of keeping it current...somehow you'd have to
fetch new data (what? daily?) and merge it into the database. I dunno...to
me it's a wheel I wouldn't want to reinvent.

Hi Charles!

You're kidding, right? There are many Whois databases out there who are not
run by people who are ICANN accredited, and I doubt they pay lots of money
for the data. How do they do it?

Cheers!

Getting the entire data set is easy :) Or, this is how *I* could do it:

1) Become ICANN Accredited
2) Contact each Registrar and wheedle for their whois data - they can
charge up to $10,000/year for this information if they wish

I think that's the only real way to do it...
