Neither actually.
Late last night, CIRA clarified their pricing tactics for all certified
registrars. I am confident we now understand this issue, as their message
included many different examples (only one of which contained an error,
which I have confirmed with them). There was *much* confusion amongst
certified registrars prior to this point.
Earlier in the week we had requested clarification, and received an
interesting and vague response. Since we needed to announce some pricing,
at that point decided to price to the day, only because we were sure it was
the fairest way to do it not knowing *exactly* how CIRA priced, but being
confident that this was a close enough level of precision to be fair to
ourselves, RSPs, and end users.
It turns out that we have elected a level of precision one step more
precise than CIRA in fact uses themselves. We calculate price to the
renewal/anniversary day, CIRA calculates pricing to the start of the
renewal/anniversary month.
Since there is no requirement for our pricing model to match CIRA's (other
than for simplicity and consistency), we have left this policy in place,
for now. At most, it means that you will be charged $1.50 US more (if your
anniversary/renewal date is on the 30th of the month) for your
"pre-registration" than you will be after we change our logic. We *may*
even apply the new logic retro-actively (no promises).
So, we will be changing our .ca "pre-registration" pricing early this week
to reflect the simpler formula. It will reduce the possible number of
different prices for one year "pre-registrations" to simply 12 different
options. We will send out a very clear explanation of this whole issue,
with a nice chart and picture. :)
Note, this _does not in any way_ impact "advance registrations".
