It was obviously a comment just fired off - the number was right but the
currency was wrong. Tucows are actually getting domains from Nominet for five
*pounds* each for two year registrations, plus a UK400 joining fee and
UK100 annual subscription. (Tucows would not have to pay VAT on those
prices.)
I tend to agree with the suggestion that they're overpriced though - I think
GBP5 is about USD$7 or thereabouts, and that's for two years remember. With
the quantity Tucows should be shifting, the joining fee and subscription
would have little or no affect. That's a hefty markup right there.
I also have to agree with the suggestion that gTLD domain names on OpenSRS
are overpriced in the current market. Before people start a flame war -
which, I might add, I will not get involved in - I realise that OpenSRS
service and support is excellent, however that doesn't change the fact that
people can buy retail cheaper elsewhere.
I'm not sure there's a solution really, but with the amount of domain names
sitting on the OpenSRS system, I can't see why the price couldn't come down
to eight dollars. Whatever about gTLD's though, the .uk domain names are
vastly overpriced. I will only be registering them on special request, since
my pricing could not be competitive with UK registrars by any manner of means.
And while I'm at it, I must admit that I find the VAT arrangements very
confusing altogether. There's something seriously wrong there. That's not to
suggest that OpenSRS are pulling the wool over our eyes, but simply that the
system looks completely wrong to me. I think that a bean-counter has either
gotten confused or greedy somewhere along the line.
