Dear Matt:
The hidden truth is that registering domains is a loss leader component,
where only the wholesalers like Register.com and Opensrs can make money as
an impure play. Given the current lack of restrictions in the resellers
ranks (anybody can get in), the market value for a domain is $10. or less
for any person computer and internet savvey. I suggest you offer
registrations for free, but bundled with some other more profitable group of
services such as virtual web hosting. In other words, offer web hostings,
and site design and FREE domains as a package and then charge less than AOL.
Our approach is to go after non-computer savvey businesses, charge $999. for
a complete dynamic website design and implementation made up of open source
CRM, Data warehousing/mining, community, auction, etc. all set up both on
the internet and in their office. We throw in their domain name for free,
charge only $21.95 per month for comprehensive hosting, maintenance and
management of their website, and even link them up for content delivery and
online stores. After the first hit, extra services do require a setup fee
and an additional monthly fee.
We also have a $1500/month budget for advertising, and find ads in Church
Bulletins, on the outside of Safeway grocery stores, classified flea market
papers etc. to work. You didn't mention advertising! I am sure you
realized it is not enough to set up a website. That is like having a small
store in the middle of the desert! You must heavily advertise to a
carefully targeted market. Direct mail is also good.
