i have no idea why we keep up the pretense of calling them cctlds
anymore. sure - its a historical thing, and that was their original
intent - to be country code tlds. but the reality is that cctlds are
increasingly being used to designate a short hand form of a word.
.la - los angels
.ca - california
.bx - box
.tm - trademark
.fm - fm radio
.am - am radio
.tv - television (but they did not do well selling that and now it's new
media)
and so on and so forth etc. the reality is that as cctlds most of them
are crap. and the registrys are doing their best to add value. the .fm
idea was going to make them lots of money - it didn't, same for the .am
tld, same for .tv - which has a major investment in legal gurantees and
is now being saved by nsi.
but you do have a point todd. the gac (government advisory committee) at
icann is trying to put the cctlds under the direct control of their
respective governments. if they actually manage to do this and the
government changes the registries mandate the net result could be alot of
domain holders loosing their domains to meet local government policy.
of course the cctld concept could all be history soon anyway - if icann
fails to respond appropriately to the cctld community - the may use the
nuclear option (icann's greatest fear) and pull the trigger and leave the
usg root.
