domain transfer timeout period

I looked around in the FAQ and didn't see where it talked about the transfer timeout.  
Is there any way to increase this value?   For instance today I've got a client who is 
working with their consultant.  He's due there today and would have helped them ack 
the transfer requests.  The reg system timed them out last night so now I've got to 
resubmitt them again.
