the .US domain

Does anyone know when or how Verisign/NSI got involved with the management
of the .us domain?  I assume ISI just decided to get out of it and NSI
stepped in?

www.us is the main website for .us

And when/if anyone's going to figure out how to fix the major problems .us
has (Like the hokey-un-userfriendly registration process?)
