IF we considered the possibility of moving to a shared-handle-registry,
this would be a great idea. (e.g., DB2795 @ NSI moves to "Registry Handle
DB2795" and then I update it via my registrar of choice, etc. etc., but all
registrars can reference the data).
My issue with handles stems from a problem I'm having with an NSI host handle.
For example, if you look up a very old / outdated host handle with NSI:
[No name] (NS37398-HST)
Hostname: NS1.MEGACITY.ORG
Address: 63.201.65.218
System: ? running ?
Record last updated on 22-Jan-2000.
Database last updated on 4-Jan-2001 14:46:16 EST.
except that "MEGACITY.ORG" hasn't been with NSI for ages. And
NS1.MEGACITY.ORG has moved somewhere else, as evidenced by:
Domain Name: MEGACITY.ORG
[snip]
Domain servers in listed order:
NS1.MEGACITY.ORG 64.71.143.244
NS1.PYROTECHNICS.COM 207.7.10.2
NS2.PYROTECHNICS.COM 207.7.10.3
And, of course, I can't get NSI to handle the host update properly on THEIR
end, because (wait for it!) they're not the registrar of record for
MEGACITY.ORG.
So any NSI domain that USES NS1.MEGACITY.ORG, when queried via whois (such
as, say, EVANSCOLLECTIVE.COM is an example) will show the incorrect IP
address (even though the root-servers have the proper glue records in
place).
THIS is the type of problem I have with handles in general. If NSI wasn't
maintaining its own little "handle", they'd simply be pointing at a
hostname, which would be populated by the registry, and not by some "handle
record" on their end. :-/
