Phillip, just to clarify this point a little bit more, unlike
Ownership transfers with Network Solutions, the domain is NEVER
deleted during a Registrar to Registrar transfer, so there is no risk
of "losing" the domain name as a result of the transfer process (which
is what I think you were asking about, if not, oh well, it probably
helps to have it clarified anyway).  Chuck says to do it at least 3
weeks before, I'd say do it much sooner.

After all there is no penalty, you don't lose any of the remaining
time, and you have a big enough buffer to deal with any delays that
some registrars (Register.com and Registrars.com mostly, NSI is
actually pretty good about this issue) have been known to cause for
domains being transferred away from them.
