Actually, I'm working on that process right now. We're not going to pick a
default Reseller and shunt everyone over to them, in case anyone was worried
about them. We're still in early meetings, but, here's what we're thinking:
a) establish a fair process to determine that the Reseller is, in fact, out
of business (or at the very least, providing a level of service WELL (and I
mean WELL) below the level contracted for in the Reseller agreement. We'd
like everyone to rest assured here that we're not talking about not
answering one or two support calls or emails. The bar will be up there, and
Reseller will be given every chance to serve their customers.
b) Once we have satisfied ourselves that the Reseller in question has
suffered a complete meltdown, we will lock out their account, and notify all
Registrants that their Reseller has gone out of business, and we will refer
them to other OpenSRS resellers. The plan (initially, at any rate) is to use
the same referral list that we currently use when Registrants come our way
looking to register domain names. there will be repeated messages at this
phase, details to be worked out.
c) The registrants will then choose a new reseller, the domain will be
transfered (keeping in mind that we'll have automated Reseller to Reseller
transfers in June sometime) and all will be well.
Now, sure, that's the idyllic picture..there are a few issues, such as:
a) registrant language
b) registrant email address invalid
c) registrant ignore issues, domain expires, registrant yells, etc.
..and others....certainly.
....but as I said, we're just beginning work on our formal process for this.
Please everyone, keep in mind that this is presented in the spirit of
openness, and that this should not be taken as our announcement on the
process. Once we are further along, I will post a more detailed DRAFT of
what we're thinking, and invite commentary. Comments certainly won't be
ignored now, but this is nothing more than the product of some thinking and
one or two meetings on the subject.
Thanks,
Ken
