To be even more explicit about this statement, customers whose domains you
register through any registrar are those registrar's customers. This is an
ICANN perpetuated reality that there is no escaping from. The saving grace
is finding a registrar that has a demonstrated (you know where this is
going) track record of "hand's-off-fair-play".
A number of prominent registrars are on the record in some way or another
specifically stating that wholesale is a short to mid term strategy that
will eventually be eliminated and replaced with a more profitable direct
sales model. Translation: Resellers only want to pay $10 or less for a
domain registration. End-users will pay $35 per year. We can make a ton of
money by cutting out the middle man after they get us a ton of customers
that we can charge $35 to directly.
