Chuck,
Though it pains me to say it, NSI has a number of features that make it
much easier to manage our networks.
We have DNS servers hosts managed at network Solutions. NSI lets us set
up the hosts so that if anyone registers using our hosts, or changes an
an existing domain so that it uses our hosts, NSI sends an automatic
notification to the coordinator of that host. We also get a notification
if someone moves a domain AWAY from our hosts.
Having a heads-up on customers who don't tell us when/if they're moving
to/from our servers is is a Very Good Thing. We've been wanting to
implement our own cross-registry version of this for some time, but
Verisign-GRS doesn't seem to want to respond to our request to join the
TLD Zone File Access Program.
Having this kind of service within the registry database would seem to
be a big benefit. It shouldn't be too much of a change -- just an ENUM
in your hosts table that indicates whether the domain's tech contact
should be notified of changes that involve the host, then a function
hooked to the DNS server change functions to check the ENUM and possibly
send a notify message any time a change is made.
Probably only a few hours of work, no? ;)
