*THIS* is why I love doing business with Tucows! Where
else would you find this kind of post from none other than
the President and CEO of the company?!

>> So, is it a good idea or a bad idea?

SHORT ANSWER: good idea

LONGER ANSWER (Sorry, I must):

Elliot, you hit all the right points. We want to retain the
relationship with our customers, we want to be able to
control and manage it (and brand it), and we count on you
to throw your weight around and offer us a good deal.

I enjoyed the conversations about SnapNames (well, right
up until it started getting sort of "attack-ey") because
it helped me gain an understanding of their business model
in a way that I would never have taken the time to find
out on my own. There are, after all, only so many hours
in a day.

IMHO, discuss-list was the right place for this, as what
was being offered was an extension of Tucows service offering,
rather than a special promotion to resellers (at least, that's
how I interpreted it).

My take: If it's a third-party vendor trying to sell a
service directly to resellers, it belongs on bizops-list.
If it's a third-party vendor with whom Tucows is considering
partnering to offer additional services to vendors on the
existing platform, then asking about it on discuss-list
is reasonable. It's a subtle difference, to be sure, and
I imagine others have distinctly different opinions.

Eric Longman

Subject: Ok, a quick question (Was 'Re: ATTN: Resellers -- input requested
on domain name back-orderi ng -- John Payne & Rich')

I thought I should break this up and ask a process question.

First, my bad for not directing this (or new.net, or a couple others) to
bizops. I read 'discuss' religiously. I only skim bizops every couple weeks
or so. My inclination is that this is a general discussion and that I
wouldn't interrupt anything really serious (I didn't put Cameron on to 'dev'
did I?). Be assured that Ross, Scott, Chuck, Ken, Erol, Rob, Frank, etc. all
would agree this should have been on bizops!

Next, the question. I get asked all the time to offer various apps and
services throught the channel. Rather than figure out what you all may think
of it, I have suggested on a few occasions that they post and get the answer
directly. It is also a great test of character for potential suppliers (have
I told you all lately that I love you!) as well as quite entertaining. So,
is it a good idea or a bad idea?

Please note, we would only offer it if a) you control the customer, b) you
can manage it through the api and c) we can get you a better deal than you
would be able to get yourself.

Now for the hard part. Yes or no answers only! Ok, longer if you must.
