Number 2 would probably be implemented by OpenSRS as:
Interface -> OpenSRS Email Gateway -> OpenSRS API

That's exactly the same thing as number 2, except that you have to create
the gateway instead of OpenSRS.
You're suggesting there's logic in making OpenSRS spend hundreds of
person-hours to design, create, document, and support a generic e-mail
gateway (then listen to people complain about how it doesn't perfectly
mesh with their legacy e-mail system), but it's "nonsense" for me to
explain how you could create the exact same thing in an afternoon, even
though you're one of only a few people who need it and your own version
would inevitably be better customized to your legacy system?
