Chuck, Sorry - should have mailed the list... seems to be sorted now.
Not sure if it was the client who finally managed, or if the earlier change just finally "filtered through" but it seems to work now (noticed about 2 hours ago). I still have no idea what caused it - but the cryptic error message was somewhat confusing (actually, it was more misleading than cryptic, since it implied a problem with the domains registration). Whatever the problem was, it seemed to last a few hours at least.
