sorry this is a bit long and not related to OpenSRS but related to registrar
behaviour (network solutions and eastern communications) .... while i was
doing some checking into this something very weird JUST happened (story
below)

one more question to verify i'm doing the right search thing, according to
this search result (domains and ns removed by me):

   Domain Name: XX
   Registrar: EASTERN COMMUNICATIONS CO., LTD.
   Whois Server: whois.eastcom.com
   Referral URL: http://www.3conet.com
   Name Server: XX
   Name Server: XX
   Updated Date: 05-nov-2001

The registrar is Eastern Communications Co., Ltd, right? And the whois
server is whois.eastcom.com , right?

So the correct thing to do is this (?):

> > $ whois [EMAIL PROTECTED]
> > [whois.eastcom.com]
> > Whois Server Version 2.0.0
> >
> > The Data in Eastcom's WHOIS database is provided by Eastern
> > Communication co,.Ltd. for information purposes,and to assist
> > persons in obtaining information about or related to a domain
> > name registration record.Eastern does not guararantee its
>accuracy.
> > By starting a WHOIS query, you agree that you will use this Data
> > only for lawful purposes.
> >
> > Eastcom reserves the right to modify these terms at any time.
> > Go to http://www.3conet.com for detailted information.
> >
> >
> >
> >
> >
> > The Registry database contains ONLY .COM,.NET,.ORG
>domains.
> > ---cut---

And that shows nothing. So am I to assume that they're not maintaining
their whois properly?

So it's a funny thing: this client of ours owned this domain name (registrar
network solutions), then suddenly one day it was gone and showed up as
having Registrar: Eastern Communications (above search). The reason given
by Netsol is that it expired for non-payment (client says never received
invoices, but wht's new there), and we assume it must have been
re-registered by EC. But get this: the nameservers for this domain are
STILL that of our client's! And the domain is STILL pointing to the client's
IP! (so effectively his site is still working). So i'm trying to check the
whois of EC to see if the other detaials (admin tech bill) are the same.

AND if the domain expired, shouldn't it have "not worked" or not resolved,
resulting in the client's site "going down" (and alerting him to the payment
issue)?

So anyway, I had just written an email requesting that Eastern
Communications release the details of this domain name to me (prior to
sending my first question about this to the list) because their whois wasn't
working and they were required to do so by the ICANN agreement, and JUST
NOW, our client received an email from Eastern Communications saying that
the domain was trnasferred to them BY MISTAKE! (does this happen?) I'm
awaitng that email now ... If the domain was transferred to them (from
registrar to registrar), it requires contact approval, no exceptions, right?
What kind of mistake could that be? and WHY then did netsol tell the client
the domain had expired?
