I've also had a number of domain names say "taken" for awhile, then later 'become' available. My sense is that when someone initiates a registration process, this domain name is temporarily locked out, regardless of whether the domain is successfully registered.
In my case, the customer kept entering incorrect payment information and was unable to complete the transaction. The fourth time they tried, the got "domain taken". An hour later, it was 'available' again.
