Check out djbdns (tinydns): http://www.djbdns.org/

It's free and much more secure than bind, though there is a bit of a 
learning curve.  Once familiar with it, I've found it easier to live with 
than bind.  I vaguely recall it being faster too, but can't point to any 
benchmarks.
