I've answered most of my own questions. The V2.52 upgrade
guide has a good discussion of the pre-registration process
in it.

It never occurred to me to look at the upgrade guide;
I assumed this information would be posted on the website
with the other .US stuff...

NOTE TO SCOTT: Perhaps a comment on

    http://www.opensrs.org/dotus_timelines.shtml

that there's more information for RSPs in the V2.52 Upgrade
Guide would be of value.

Subject: .US Pre-Registrations

Can somebody point me to recommended RSP procedures for .us
pre-registrations?

In particular, I'm struggling with the following questions (and/or
perceptions) about the process, and I can't find answers online:

1) As I understand it, anybody who meets the .us registration
requirements can pre-register a name. Most (all?) registrars
are taking pre-registrations that will be submitted through
the round-robin process on April 24 when the registry begins
   to take registrations. Correct?

2) Assuming #1 is correct, then there's no guarantee that you'll
get a name that you pre-register, since duplicate requests
may have been taken by Tucows and/or other registrars, and
yours may or may not be the first one submitted. If you are
the first, you get the name. If not, tough luck. Right?

3) Now we're getting to the crux of the matter. Come April 24,
I assume that I must have enough money in my Tucows account
to cover the cost of the pre-registrations which are
   successful, right? SO...

    a) How does one estimate how much you need to have on account?

    b) Do you collect the fee from your customers up front, and
then refund if they don't get the name, or do you take the
payment info and not collect the funds unless and until the
name is successfully registered? If it's the latter, how
am I notified about successful registrations (i.e., what's
the exact format of the notification -- is it a parseable
       email or something else)?

    c) Either way, let's assume that I put way more money on
account at Tucows than I actually needed. Am I stuck? Did
I tie up my capital in "domain name inventory" needlessly?

I intentionally avoided pre-registrations and landrush for
.biz and .info because nobody seemed to know what was going
on. Hopefully somebody who went through that (and paid more
attention to the goings-on than I did) can help me with the
basic process as far as money is concerned.
