Hi - We are not charging a premium for .info LR2 names. There are many reasons for this, amongst them the fact that the registry is highly discouraging this practice. Any registrars that charge exceptional fees or "processing" charges run the risk of getting the registry's attention.
By design, we will only be submitting one application for any .info name. This means we will have as fair of a shot as any other registrar. Since the registry randomly processes (registrars can not assign priority to any applications) registrations equally across registrars, there is no opportunity to offer a premium service. Unless of course, we sold our one spot to the highest bidder, which was deemed to not be worth the effort, contrary to the spirit of the offering, and unfair to our channel. Really, the best any registrar can offer as a premium is a guaranteed chance, which we assessed as being limited in value, and (given all the historical legal bologna with these types of events) risky. We have a couple of guiding principles in our LR2 offering: - minimize effort for all involved (us, resellers) - participate in a fair way - not let this one-time event with limited upside distract us from doing more important things We did feel we had to participate, but we really wanted to limit our efforts to something close to the limited opportunity here. I stand by our commitment to continually evolve, and I do think we are getting better at handling these sorts of events. In this case, the biggest improvement IMHO is our simplified approach, so that we do not spend more time on this than it merits. sA At 04:05 PM 5/12/02 -0400, [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: >to Chuck, Allan > > >I have a question concerning the .info LR2: > >Are there any special requirements / additional payments required >to participate for the registrar (like Tucows) to take part at .info LR2? > >The reason why I am asking: > >It seems that very few registrars will take part at the .info LR2 >(offering .info LR2 to the public) > >When looking to the list of available names, in my opinion only very few names >(about 1000 ?) will be interesting for the majority(99%) of registrants. >(lots of domains are just city names from Europe) > >In case there are no additional payments required by the registrar, >I expect, that about 100 registrars (not offering public registrations) >will submit very short lists which lets say 500 domains each, to grab >the 'good domain names' on behalf of their own (for later resale) > >The remaining 10 registrars like Tucows, offering a public registration >queue, will submit big lists with perhaps 10000 domains each. > >So finally the chances to be able to register a good domain name >by one of the resellers is almost < 0,01%, because the above mentioned >100 registrars with very short lists, will already have already taken >almost all 'good' domain names during the round robin process. > >Matthias > Scott Allan Director OpenSRS [EMAIL PROTECTED]
