This depents on the loosing registrar.

Some do not provide the 'auth code' at all (f.ex. NameSecure, Register.com),
(I have wasted lots of money while trying to obtain auth code form these registrars without success) some others do provide false auth code to prevent transfer.
(I had also problems with Enom.com, Speednames/Uniteddomains, EPAG/Uniteddomains)
