hi there.. I'm new here, and was hoping someone could shed a little light on
this question i have.
we were getting a lot of spam for a porn site called ChristinasHomepage.com,
so we wanted to find some actual contact info so we could ask them to cut it
out. the whois record at netsol looked like this:
Domain names in the .com, .net, and .org domains can now be
registeredwith many different competing registrars. Go to
http://www.internic.net
Domain Name: CHRISTINASHOMEPAGE.COM
Registrar: NETWORK SOLUTIONS, INC.
Whois Server: whois.networksolutions.com
Referral URL: http://www.networksolutions.com
Name Server: NS1.CONEPUPPY.COM
Name Server: NS2.CONEPUPPY.COM
Updated Date: 04-aug-2002
it was strange that netsol was listed as the referral URL because that WHOIS
record does not look like one of theirs. so I checked out conepuppy and got
a similar record, but opensrs.org was listed as the whois server and
referral URL. so I checked whois at opensrs and found contact information
for conepuppy but none for christinashomepage.com. I sent email to opensrs
support asking about it -- and wondering if opensrs domain registrars were
really allowed to hide contact info like that -- and they replied, just
telling me to check whois. I was annoyed at this response, figuring they
didn't actually read my email, until I checked whois again -- and now,
netsol's whois has a complete record for christinashomepage.com, showing it
registered with verisign. it also lists the record as being created on
august 8th (after this all started).
so my questions are, a) does it seem likely that conepuppy decided to boot
them after getting lots of spam complaints, and they moved to netsol, and b)
if they hadn't booted them, could they really continue to hide their contact
information? (if that was indeed what was happening.) perhaps I just
caught them right in the middle of a switch..
sorry, i'm just learning about opensrs.. thanks!
