Hi Chris, Good luck fighting this one. We used to be a Register.Com reseller (I know... STUPID!!!), and as such have a large number of domains which we have been moving over to OpenSRS as they come up for renewal. We have yet to see one go smoothly, and have had no luck in fighting their deceptive transfer practices.
We have found that the best thing to do is simply inform the user of what they will run into before they get to the final (and unnecessary by ICANN regs) stage of confirming the transfer away at RCOM. We also offer to complete the final stage for our users if they desire. We simply ask that they forward the email from RCOM along with their request for assistance. Since we've started offering assistance with this portion of the transfer, few have failed, and most have been completed on the first attempt. Also, it seems to work best if we initiate the Tucows portion of the transfer late in the week. This way, the user will most likely receive their RCOM message in the middle of the next week, and not have to deal with the weekend. RCOM counts days that they do not process transfers away into the 3 day timeout limit. So, if your user receives their message on a Friday, they will count that day, plus the two weekend days, and time out the request on Monday whether they have received the confirmation or not. Hope this helps, and again, good luck. Just don't give up.
